Sources and methodology
Every number on this site is a range, and every range traces back to a published source. This page lists them, says what each one supports, and explains what we did when sources disagreed.
Last checked: 4 November 2026.
Method in four sentences
- Premiums come from national industry data (NAPHIA) and from 2026 rate comparisons published by insurers, brokers and consumer-finance publishers.
- Treatment costs come from published procedural-cost studies and from veterinary hospitals and specialty practices that publish their own price guides.
- Where sources disagreed, the published range was widened to cover both rather than averaged into a false midpoint.
- Every figure is rounded — to the nearest $100 on treatments, to the nearest dollar on premiums — because a precise-looking number implies an accuracy that does not exist.

Where the data is weakest
Being explicit about this is more useful than pretending to precision:
- Premiums age badly. Rate comparisons are snapshots. The same policy was quoted materially higher in 2023 than in 2020, and will be higher again next year. Use the ranges for shape, not for a budget line.
- Regional spread is bigger than breed spread. The same dog can cost roughly twice as much to insure in one state as another, and a metro emergency hospital can charge 50% more than a rural practice for the same surgery.
- Recurring conditions are the least standardised. Annual costs for allergies, kidney disease, diabetes and heart failure depend almost entirely on the individual case. Those rows are the ones to treat as order-of-magnitude only.
- Breed risk descriptions are population statements. “French Bulldogs are over-represented for IVDD” says nothing about any individual dog.
